It is quite easy to read, there really is no theoretical framework and not steeped in historical detail. One huge shortcoming of the work is the constant reference to Pu Songling, which appears in the middle of para|About the Author|Daniel Hsieh is an associate professor of Chinese at Purdue University.

This book focuses on how women and love are portrayed in chuanqi fiction, a genre of Chinese literature of the Tang dynasty. It argues that the emergence of "love" as a theme in Chinese literature is closely related to the historical background of the Tang dynasty.
